Glass Dinnerware
Glass is a frequently used material in square dinnerware, along with plastic, earthenware, porcelain, and stoneware.
Glass is a solid, amorphous material that is usually clear to see
through. It is a very brittle material, and it is very popular for use in windows, eyewear, bottles, and other
things like this. There are many types of glassy materials that may or may not be considered glass, depending upon
what definition you are using. Some of these include soda-lime glass, borosilicate glass, sugar glass, acrylic
glass, Muscovy-glass, and aluminum oxynitride.
As discussed in a Wikipedia article on glass, the term glass was
actually introduced back in the Roman Empire, in the glass making center of Trier. The original word was
glesum, which was probably a Germanic word for a substance that was lustrous and transparent.
Glass is, basically, an inorganic product that is created through
fusion. It is then cooled to a solid state, through its glass transition, without crystallizing. The main component
of many types of glass is silica. The term glass is sort of a loose term used to describe most types of materials
with glass-like properties. In fact, a lot of amorphous solids, including plastics and resins, are often labeled
with the name.
Glass is used to make a lot of different products. It is used to
make windows, including stained glass windows that are used in very large, decorated buildings. It is used to make
dinnerware, such as glasses, plates, and even serving
trays.
Glass can also be used to make table-tops, to make aquariums for
fish, or to make any number of artistic decorations. You can buy glass products from just about any retail store,
or you can order them off of the internet. Some glass products are very decorative, while others are more plain.
Some glass, such as the glass used in some windows and car windshields, is shatterproof.
