Porcelain Dinnerware
Porcelain is commonly used as a material in square dinner plate sets, as is plastic, earthenware, stoneware, and glass.
Porcelain is a type of ceramic material that is produced by
heating certain materials (mostly clay) to certain temperatures in a kiln. The high temperatures brought on by the
firing produce glass and mineral mullite within the porcelain, making it sturdy, tough, and translucent.
According to a Wikipedia article, The name porcelain actually
comes from an Italian porcellano, because it looks like a cowrie shell. Some people call porcelain “china”,
mostly because China was, in fact, the place where porcelain was first developed.
Porcelain, as a material, is not very elastic. It is, however,
very hard, strong, glass-like, white, brittle, resonant, and translucent it is also resistant to thermal shock and
chemical attack. Porcelain is used to make a very wide variety of different products, including plates, bowls,
coffee cups, decorations, dolls, and all kinds of electrical and even dental products.
It can be hard to tell porcelain and stoneware dinnerware apart, mostly because the definitions
lead to a bit of overlapping. In other words, some types of porcelain might actually also fit the description of
stoneware, and vice-versa.
There are three main categories of porcelain. There is hard paste
porcelain, soft paste porcelain, and bone china. A lot of porcelain is translucent, and this can be demonstrated by
holding a china plate up to the sunlight and putting your fingers behind it. You will usually be able to see the
shadow come through the plate.
China can be bought at just about any store, and can also be
ordered online. A lot of people like dining with porcelain
plates and dishes for their hardiness and for their
good looks. They are breakable, but not as breakable as some types of
glass, which are more brittle. For the most part, china will last you a long time. Some china has
survived for thousands of years!
